I wrote the composition “S’Morzando “(2006) on the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth. This remarkable event became one of the impulses behind this composition’s creation, which contains some Mozart quotes (two direct quotes from the second movement of the piano concerto in C major, K.503). These quotes are not merely slated but are implanted, as they were, in the structure of the work; the quotes become original cadenzas at the end of the composition.

Beyond this, the whole piece is something of a quote – here, Mozart’s refined grace grows to include the entire ensemble, gradually replacing the initial quotes. As the work develops, I transfigure Mozart’s material — only echoes of the quotes remain, incorporated into elements of the natural scale.
